Tucson, Arizona, is exploding with a charming and delicious restaurant scene. Therefore during my recent visit, I sought out six different spots and indulged in many of their offerings. Furthermore, four of my picks are market-style, of which I am a huge fan.
Additionally, the beauty of Tucson is you are relatively close to many places in the city. Hence you can be downtown from most anywhere in minutes and easily travel between restaurants.
Locale Neighborhood Italian Restaurant
The Locale, the first of the market styles, is where you can start the day with a cappuccino or an Aperol spritz. Walk in and see young families gathering for breakfast, girlfriends laughing over a glass of wine, or neighbors picking up their homemade bakery.
Appreciate their Italian influence and try the Carpaccio for starters, Sfoglia for your entree, and the Tartufo for dessert — remember to grab a bottle of wine to go.
Ghini’s French Caffe and Bistro
Ghini’s is an adorable bistro specializing in French flair that immediately transports you to Southern France. Hence the romantic French music, aromas of fresh croissants, baguettes, and pastries welcome you upon entrance.
Furthermore, Ghini’s has an approachable wine list and all-day mimosas. Moreover, there are delectable les croques and stuffed crepes. While I recommend the classic ham croques, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Because Chef Satta spills her passion into every dish, you will taste the love.
Time Market
The second of the market-style restaurants on my list, Time Market is truly a one-stop shop. Buy fresh produce, bread, and a bottle of wine from their beautiful global selection, or plop down at the counter for lunch.
The chic hustle and bustle vibe sets a mood that makes you wish you were a regular if you are not one already. Pizzas are a must here — try the Merguez, housemade Merguez sausage, shaved fennel, lemon zest, mint, red sauce, and mozzarella.
Ermanos
In the heart of the University of Arizona, Ermanos offers comfort foods like Fried Catfish and Lobster Rolls, emphasizing unique sauces and spices in each dish.
Moreover, belly up to the bar or enjoy casual seating in the dining area while imbibing in the quaffable wine list or the plethora of cocktails. In particular, I recommend the Orange Glory Cocktail with its quirky ingredients of Aperol, dry Curacao, orange soda, and Prosecco.
Maynards Market & Kitchen
Maynards, the third of my market-style selections, is a darling place inside a restored train station. The patio looks out on the old rail tracks creating a fun atmosphere.
With a gourmet menu, I recommend the Ben Forbes’ Tartare, the Pivot Salad with Duck Confit, or the House Pasta with poached shrimp. And check out the excellent myriad of Arizona wines; it is most impressive.
